Black Ridge House
Kinloch · Residential · Smart home
ExteriorDark timber cladding set into the native tussock, with the electrical services kept deliberately out of sight.
Black Ridge House combines a strong material palette of dark exterior cladding and warm timber interiors with an electrical and climate-control installation designed to remain deliberately understated.
Balance completed the electrical installation throughout the home, together with the smart-home system and a zoned approach to heating and cooling. The upper level is serviced by ducted air conditioning, allowing conditioned air to be distributed discreetly through the bedrooms and living areas without introducing visually dominant equipment. Downstairs, a high-wall heat pump provides efficient heating and cooling while responding to the different requirements of the lower level.
The electrical installation was coordinated closely with the timber-lined ceilings, custom joinery and large areas of glazing. Recessed downlights were carefully positioned within the timber ceilings to maintain clean architectural lines, while concealed LED lighting was incorporated around the kitchen joinery to provide a softer ambient layer after dark.
The smart-home system brings lighting, climate and selected electrical functions together into a single, intuitive control platform. This allows the home to move easily between everyday, entertaining and evening settings while keeping conventional switches and controls visually restrained.
At the entrance, recessed soffit lighting leads along the sheltered walkway and highlights the dark timber exterior without overpowering it. Inside, lighting remains warm and subtle, working with the natural timber surfaces rather than competing with them.
The result is a home where electrical, automation and climate systems are largely unseen — quietly supporting the architecture, comfort and day-to-day use of the house.
