Black Gable House

Taupō district · Residential · New build

Front at duskLandscape uplighting and soffit lighting give the dark gabled forms depth and definition after sunset.

Black Gable House was delivered as a fully coordinated lighting, electrical and ducted air-conditioning project, with each system designed to complement the home’s dark exterior, warm timber interiors and open-plan living spaces.

Balance completed the full electrical installation and lighting design, developing a layered scheme that gives the home a strong presence after dark while remaining clean and understated during the day.

Externally, uplighting through the landscaping draws attention to the planting and vertical forms around the house, while soffit lighting runs beneath the eaves and across the garage to provide practical illumination and define the architecture. The contrast between the dark cladding and warm exterior lighting gives the home depth and character at night without over-lighting the site.

Inside, the lighting was designed around the way each space is used. A slim linear pendant provides focused light over the kitchen island, while track lighting and recessed downlights create a flexible layer of illumination through the kitchen, dining and living areas. Decorative fittings are used selectively to add character without competing with the architecture.

In the living room, recessed lighting is positioned around the timber-panelled fireplace wall, drawing attention to the materiality and creating a softer atmosphere in the evening. Bathrooms use discreet downlights and feature lighting to provide both functional task lighting and a more refined finish.

The ducted air-conditioning system was integrated into the home to provide comfortable year-round heating and cooling while maintaining the simplicity of the interiors. Grilles and outlets were coordinated with the ceiling and room layouts so the system remains visually discreet.

The electrical, lighting and climate systems were planned together from the outset, allowing power, switching, lighting and mechanical services to work as one coordinated installation.

The result is a home that feels considered from every angle — with lighting that strengthens the architecture, climate control that disappears into the background, and a complete electrical installation supporting the way the home is lived in.
